ß-alethine

ß-aletheine (below left) is the reduced or thiol form of the disulfide, ß-alethine. Although far more potent than other comparable immune stimulants, such as levamisole, ß-alethine is considerably less potent than vitalethine. The striking increase in the potency of ß-alethine upon addition of the carboxy groups to its free amine moieties to form vitalethine indicates that this process and its reversal are important regulatory events for biological systems. The thiol, vitaletheine, is shown below right for comparison.
