I am interested in our community of Realtors and I am concerned
about its longevity. The most obvious reason for this is that I
make my living selling real estate and would like to assure my own
income security. I am also a serious computer enthusiast who has
studied programming and other advanced computer processes. I have
used computers in my real estate practice for a number of years and
I am completely and totally convinced that our industry is in
danger of being infiltrated by computer people who offer technical
help to buyers and sellers. This non-Realter based information
system is already underway. Prodigy and American Online as well as
other computer information systems already offer networked real
estate sections with for sale by owner listings of properties. As
a Realtor this makes me terribly nervous. I spend much of my time
studying computer magazines and reading about the new technology
that is only months away.
The most important thing that I felt I could do in order to slow
this loss of control in our industry was to become as active as I
could at our Board. Our current president Bill Campbell III and
Nelson Janes our executive officer, as well as all the others who
work so hard for the benefit of all of us are to be given a sincere
thank you for their tireless effort in dealing with all the new
issues that have been circulating through the national board. I
would advise all of you as practicing Realtors to become as active
as possible and help gain control of the future of our industry.
The other way we can assure our control over the future of our
industry is through education. Computers and new technology are
somewhat frightening to the people that have been operating in the
sales field for years and have got along without them. They really
are not as difficult as they seem. There are some basic principles
that need to be learned. Just as with anything else the fear and
confusion will disappear quickly with the right instructor at your
side. I presently teach a 6 elective credit class that will truly
help you get a handle on the computer age. I would advise you to
consider attending one of these classes and let me show you how
much fun you can have while learning computing. There is no
question in my mind that you will benefit from these classes.
I am presently rewriting my class to accomodate the people that are
using Windows. I hope to be approved by March or April to teach
additional classes for those that chose the graphics based
environents. I personally use both DOS and Windows depending on
the program that I am using. However, those of you that are
depending on Windows because it is easier than DOS are correct.
There are some functions in Windows that are truly awesome. I am
presently compiling the detailed information regarding the new
class.
I would also like to offer my services when your computer is
giving you trouble or if you have a problem making a decision about
upgrading. I can, at a minimal cost instruct you how to prevent
problems. I am well versed in computer crashes and can help undo
a castrophe.
