With all of the furor about Windows ' 95, I wonder how all of you feel?
I am probably not going to run out and upgrade just yet. Eventually when I
decide to buy a new computer, I'll probably own the new 32 bit operating
system automatically because PC manufacturers will install it for us. I'm
sure the new software will be the wave of the future. However, the rush
that Microsoft would instill in all of us, I believe is a little premature.
First of all, Windows ' 95 requires a minimum of 8 megabytes of memory and
really needs 16 to run well. Also, the operating system itself needs over
40 megabytes of disk space to store its files. Then, in order to actually
use the 32 bit system, all of your applications (programs) need to be
upgraded. So the $89 upgrade to the Windows ' 95 operating system needs
a super large hard drive, lots of memory and all new programs. Hey, I just
got used to the programs that I now own! I don't think I am ready to spend
another $1,000 or more for hardware and software. I also don't think I am
in need of spending the next few months learning all new programs either.
All of this upgrading in order to run a little faster doesn't sound like
anything I will do just yet.
Real Estate people started using Computers originally for searching
properties. Then a little later we started using them as daytimers and
database managers. In my class I teach some macros and automated procedures
so the actual time spent at the computer is diminished. The computer needs
to be a tool that helps us create better time management and allows us more
time for selling. Some Real Estate people are now using notebook computers
and feel like they are quite computer literate. Programs like Altaira and
Top Producer give us some really good tools to use in our business practices.
I have been an advocate of the use of computers in Real Estate for years.
I do not buy into the software industry telling us that every 6 months we
need to spend thousands of dollars so that we remain "state of the art".
I continue to teach and maintain that once you acquire a system that works
and aids you in your business, stick with it and get back to selling. Bill
Gates and the other moguls of the industry need you to believe that upgrading
is a continual thing. How else could they be so rich.
IF IT ISN'T
BROKEN
WHY FIX IT ?
With all the 486's and Pentiums out there, how many of you are really
confident that you are getting the most out of your computers? I still use
a 386 DX at home and carry a 486 DX notebook in the field. I have no
immediate need to upgrade and have my systems humming along. Why would I
take it all apart and redo everything when it is working fine. It doesn't
make any sense. One statement I always make to my students in class is
that with Stellar and DOS and an old 286, I can probably do more than most
of you can on much newer and faster computers. I am not saying this to
boast, so much as to say I have learned how to apply some simple procedures
specifically to the needs of Real Estate. I have no games on my computers
and lately I only use them when it relates specifically to helping me earn
a living.
I spoke on the Internet and the World Wide Web in last months newsletter.
I feel it is such an important issue that I need to add something again
this month. The Web is gaining new momentum every day. I am now publishing
a "Home Page" on the Web. A home page is a location that allows users to
view text and graphics that can advertise you and what you do to the entire
world. It allows a PC user in any part of the world that is researching the
Web to easily locate your page and communicate with you about what you are
offering. I have color pictures of my listings with a description of the
home. I have already in only one month communicated with real buyers that
I am presently working with.
