Freeware, FreeDOS and 4DOS-related stuff

FreeDOS programs

You can reach these items from James Hall's Maintainers List. To the best of my knowledge, these all work correctly on 8086/8088 systems.

Locate v1.31, 2003-12-09 (Free) General purpose file-finder for DOS and Windows 9x. A86 source. Some features may not work correctly under FreeDOS.
Locate v1.25d, 1998-09-30 (Free) General purpose file-finder with A86 source. This is an older release for FreeDOS compatibility.
Deltree v1.02e, 2003-06-22 (GPL) Terror of files and destroyer of subdirectories. NASM source.
Cal v1.07, 1998-08-12 (Free) Low-fat calendar. Display monthly or yearly calendars for Gregorian years 1753 through 2399. A86 source.
Cmos v1.00, 1999-05-05 (GPL) Utility to save and restore CMOS memory on older PCs. A86 source.
SwitChar v1.00a, 1998-08-13 (GPL) Get or set the DOS switch character, even on DOS versions which don't support the SwitChar API. A86 source.

Alternate

Many of these overlap existing programs. All are freeware. Most include source. These may not work correctly under FreeDOS, or on 8086/8088-based computers.

Attrib v1.09b, 2001-01-01 (GPL) Change attributes. NASM source.
Payday v1.04, 1999-03-27 (Free) No-fat calendar :-)
Touch v1.08d, 2003-10-05 (GPL) Change files' date and time stamps. Now FreeDOS and 8086 compatible. NASM source.
ChkSum v1.04a, 2000-04-24 (GPL) Display CRC32 and XDIR checksums of files. 8086 compatible. NASM source.
Mdir v1.05b, 2001-08-11 (Free) Microsoft-ish directory lister for users of non-Microsoft DOSses. FreeDOS and 8086 compatible.
Ej v1.04, 2003-07-01 (GPL) Eject CD-ROM tray. NASM source.

4DOS and 4NT-related stuff

4DOS.HLP 2006-04-04 Variant help file for 4DOS v7.50.130. Probably not useful to anyone not running 4DOS. Now superseded by the updated help files included at Lucho's Revived 4DOS site.
BTM_Syntax 2008-02-14 Syntax files for Crimson Editor. Contains all internal commands, variables and functions in 4DOS 7.61, 4NT / TCC / Take Command through 9.00.96.
RegTweaks.btm 2008-02-25

This is the batch file I use to install Explorer context-menu entries for 4NT or Take Command. It combines the functionality of 4NTBATCH.BTM and 4NTHERE.BTM, with a number of minor enhancements. The current shell can be added to the right-click context menu for .BAT/.CMD and .BTM files, allowing you to launch any batch file from Explorer in the shell of your choice. Edit and Print options are added to the context menu for .BTM files. If RegTweaks finds itself running in 4NT under TCI, then a “TCI tab here” option can be added to the context menu for drives and subdirectories. Finally, the current shell can be added to AppPaths in the registry. The batch file backs up the appropriate registry entries before starting and prompts the user before making each tweak.

Requires 4NT or Take Command version 7 or better. Tested in Windows XP. Not tested in Vista; I assume you would need to launch 4NT/TCC/Take Command/TCI with the “Run as administrator” option for it to be effective.
